There are slight differences between a bookkeeper and an accountant. An accountant can help assess the overall financial picture of a company, offer strategic advice, and complete the company’s taxes. On the other hand, a bookkeeper assists with the day-to-day activities such as: entering and paying invoices in a timely fashion, cash receipts, and payroll to name a few.
Some companies are large enough to have sufficient work for a bookkeeper to be on staff part-time or full-time and some even have an accountant on staff. However, for smaller companies it is beneficial to consider the cost/benefit scenario of trying to handle these tasks by yourself versus hiring a professional. You may be surprised the benefits outsourcing your bookkeeping and accounting needs can bring!
